Elements of PEERS is a multi-phase program designed for those wanting to transition from the sex trade toward mainstream employment and/or education. Participants attend groups at PEERS Opportunity Centre in Esquimalt.

The curriculum for this six-month program—funded through a contract with the Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance—was developed through focus groups with PEERS participants, and features course work on addiction issues, health and lifestyle change, family connections and mental health. In the last two months, the focus shifts to preparing for mainstream work or post-secondary training and features Myers-Briggs testing, resume writing and 64 hours of volunteer experience.

All Elements participants receive a monthly bus pass while in the program, as well as financial support toward moving expenses, recreation, child care and clothing. Attendance incentives are provided each month in the form of gift cards ranging from $50 at the end of Month 1 to $100 at the end of Month 4. In the final two months, Elements participants can receive up to $240 a month in incentives for good attendance and volunteer work. www.peers.bc.ca

  • We Care About Children and Youth
Boys and Girls Club services are available to all young people. Young people naturally seek excitement, friendship and support. Happily, the chance to offer encouragement, directions, and counselling comes as a result of gaining their trust.
  • We Acknowledge a Sense of Self-Worth is Fundamental to Individual Dignity
We hold that an individual’s sense of self-worth is fundamental and Boys and Girls Club Services support this basic value.
  • We Understand Children and Youth Need to be Heard
We believe that every young person has the right to be listened to...to be heard and responded to, as someone who really matters and as someone whose ideas could make a difference.
  • We Believe a Sense of Belonging is Essential to Healthy Growth
We acknowledge the need of all young people to be accepted and liked, and to become competent, both among their peers and in the eyes of adults. We are sensitive to the isolation of the individual who is different in any way, and we endeavour to create in our services an atmosphere which fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance.
  • We Foster Cultural Understanding and Acceptance
Boys and Girls Club Services encourage and foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. Our programs and services are accessible to; all youth and reflect the ever-changing needs of youth and families in our communities. www.bgcvic.org
